Coyotes 5, Islanders 4

Last night I found a new player to hate, #28 Jackman for the NY Islanders. He tried to decapitate the Telly Monster and broke his mask. This is a game we needed Carcillo in as Jackman did not get called for a penalty and Jovo/Jokinen just talked at him after he did this. He did get some payback in the form of boos every time he stepped on the ice and a nice smashing hit from none other than David Hale. I don’t care if we get a penalty, he needed to pay for what he did. It opened the door for the Islanders to abuse Telly all night. Telly usually is calm and collected but there was a couple of times he was getting upset with the Islanders abuse he’d actually shove them.

Speaking of Telly, he let in 4 goals last night but I can’t blame him for all the goals as our D totally fell apart in the third. It was almost like we had 5 forwards out there in the third. We reverted back to the Coyotes of past seasons…we are ahead so we let off. Well the problem with that is it allows the other team to come back. At least we were able to hold them off for the win.

Congrats to Doug Weight who recorded is 1,000 career point last night. That is quite the accomplishment. Also, kudos to the Coyotes fans who gave him a standing ovation. He seemed quite humble as he thanked the crowd multiple times, looking as if he wished the camera would be off him soon.

Bryz’s holiday mask is up for auction on the NHL auction site. It’s currently at 1250 and there is 11 days to go. This mask should raise a lot of money for Coyotes Charities.

Winnik has been sent to San Antonio on a two-week conditioning stint. He was asked by the organization to go and had the class to say ok. He knows that he wasn’t getting playing time here and now he can go play in San Antonio and get his game back. He knows what he needs to work on and now he will have the chance to do that in a game, not just practice. This is why I love Winnik. He works hard and when given a chance to really work on his game, he takes it. There are so many athletes (and non-athletes too) who think just being them qualifies them for the job. I don’t care who you are, you always need to work to improve yourself.

Coyotes are currently tied point wise with Anaheim. We have the exact same numbers as Anaheim, 39GP, 19W, 15L, 5OT for a points total of 43. Not to put too much pressure on my boys, but this means tomorrow nights game against Anaheim is crucial. Hopefully Carcillo will be back in the lineup as we will need some toughness against the Ducks. Also, being on their home turf is going to make it difficult. The boys will need to take it up a notch and hang tough (yes, I did just make a NKOTB reference. You know you love it..)

Call to San Antonio Rampage Fans

Ok, after much googling, I have come to the conclusion that the Rampage must not have a lot of fans. Or they don’t have very many passionate fans. Or their fans are just to busy to blog about hockey. I have looked for blogs written by fans over my lunch hour and a half and all I could find was a couple of blogs that haven’t been updated since 2007. Now I know people are busy, but I can’t believe how difficult it is to find one up-to-date fan blog for the Rampage. I know the Aeros have a couple (I am a reader of a couple of them and I came across a lot of stuff for them when searching for Rampage).

I did find two blogs that are up to date. One is from the Rampage radio announcer:
http://www.sarampage.com/news/blogsjoe/#We_Begin
It is cute but hasn’t been updated since he spilled hot chocolate on Matt Jones on the plane. I will definitely blog roll it since it may provide some good information once he puts up a new entry.

I also found the blog for what appears to be the city of San Antonio:
http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/rampage/
His latest blog entry made me realize the Coyotes were not the only team to come up with a stupid marketing phrase. The Coyotes have Be Coyote Cool, while the Rampage gets We Will Rampage. Wow. I wonder if they brainstormed those together... This will also be added to my blog roll. The writer seems very knowledgeable of the team.

It seems I have not been following the Rampage at all. As it turns out, the Rampage has only won 2 of their 13 games. What is going on down there? Is it a coaching issue, defensive/offensive/goaltending issue? Looks like I have some research to do. I am also going to continue to look for Rampage blogs. They have to be out there somewhere!

And if anyone out there has (or comes across) an updated Rampage fan blog please share with me.

And look for an entry on the Coyotes at Minnesota game from last night. I started it last night, but did not have the heart to finish it.

Coyotes 4 Blue Jackets 2

Please stay tuned for a Rampage update. I have a guest blogger who will be answering some questions that we fans put together.

As for tonight’s game, the Coyotes beat the Blue jackets 4-2. As this was a radio only broadcast (and I don’t have Center Ice), I wasn’t able to see it. I did hear bits and pieces of the game. I listened on the way to the gym and the Coyotes were up 2-0. I listened on the way home and Porter and Doan scored, making it 4-0.

Somehow, from the time I got out of the car, went to get the mail, and got the game going on the computer, it was 4-2. I am still not sure how the blue jackets got those goals. No one would tell me. I think Jovo was going to the box when I got out of the car. So maybe a PP goal?

However, when I finally got the radio broadcast going at home, Hanzal got his first goal of the season to make it 5-2 with about 20 seconds left. It was an empty netter, but still, he got his goal! Way to go Hanzal.

It sounded like Yandle was having a good game. He may have been credited with one of the goals. From what the broadcasters said, Turris passed the puck to Yandle who put the puck on net. He either put it in, or Rhino tipped it in. I never did hear if the goal ended up credited to Rhino. This is why I hate radio broadcasts, I like to actually see for myself what happened. One of these years, I may have to invest in Center Ice, but it is so much money just to watch a couple of yotes games.

Scratches were Carcillo, McGrattan and Hale. Apparently Carcillo was scratched because of the stick he took to the face in Sunday night’s game (although, he was at practice on Tuesday and looked fine to me). I really would like to see McGrattan get another game but being up against Minnesota, I don’t see that for tomorrow but maybe Saturday. Hale, well he can just stay a scratch. Yandle seems to be doing much better after his benching.

Bryz was in goal tonight. I can’t assess his performance but it sounded like he didn’t do too badly. Maybe he has finally figured out how to be a starting goalie.

All Star voting starts today. The coyotes have three players on the ballot, Bryz, Jokinen and Doan. I will be voting for Doan as much as I can remember. He deserves it. He deserved it last year but Jovo got sent instead (thank god he’s not on the ballot). I am not sure that Bryz is an NHL all star goalie. There are so many other goalies out there that are much better and much more consistent. And I am still not sold on Jokinen and figure he will get it just purely because of his name.

On a side note, this morning Yandle was second for DMen for the all star game. How does that happen? Does he have an exceptionally large family and they all got on and voted multiple times? Anyway, kudos to whoever got Yandle to the top of that list, I never would have saw that coming!

Time for Forwards and 13 Assigned to SA

After listening to Tuesday nights game, it appears we still have problems with that third period. If they want to make a serious playoff run they will need to fix that real quick. We aren’t going to win a lot of games by letting the other team win in just the 3rd period alone (see game against Detroit last year, totally thought we had them beat but they came out with energy in the 3rd and we came out looking like we died).
Also, Brodeur has been reassigned to his junior team. I expect a few more cuts in the next couple of days. Wow, I wrote that on Thursday and today there were a ton of cuts! 14 to be exact.
I may have been wrong about the goalies. It looks as if Montoya may beat out Tordjman as starter in San Antonio. Montoya has been playing really well and Tordjy not so much.

Forwards
With the addition of Jokinen, we will have a pretty solid first line. Mueller, Jokinen and Doan will have talent galore and Jokinen will be a well suited match for the big Pacific division centers (Getzlaf, Marleau etc). Turris and Fedoruk will most likely skate together, which is good. Turris needs reinforcement on his link and Fedoruk can provide that. He is also a pretty good skater.
We have additional toughness with Carcillo and McGrattan. Expect McGrattan to spend a lot of time in the press box, coming out for blood when we meet teams like Dallas, LA, and the Ducks. He can take on the big guys that Carcillo struggled with last year (Ivanans). Carcillo will spend his time agitating and scoring goals (I’m thinking 20-25). He will fight but not like he did last year. I expect that the misconducts will be a thing of the past, as he seemed to learn his lesson after being sent down to SA. It does seem that Carcillo has taken his lesson to heart. It sounded as if the Flames were all over Carcillo like white on rice and he just played hockey.
Turris will most definitely make the team. Look for him to be on the 2nd line with either Fedoruk or Carcillo. He needs some protection. He is a naturally and reads the ice so well.
Lisin and Tiki (Chickenoff) are making names for themselves. I expect them to at least start with the big club. Lisin almost had the hattrick Wednesday night and Tiki got our only goal Thursday. Tiki didn’t seem to do that well during the rookie game but it looks like the nerves have worn off and he seems to be getting his game under control.
Boedker may make the team. I haven’t been impressed with his contribution to the games, but then again not being able to see the game makes a huge difference when trying to evaluate players. I expect him to see some time with the Coyotes. He may be another Mueller, get a good look at him, have him watch from the press box and see if he can adjust his game. If not, send him to where ever he needs to go.
I doubt MacLean makes the coyotes. He has not impressed in the rookie games, regular games or practice. His skating has vastly improved this summer. Send him to SA to work on his game at this level. Funny, I wrote this in the morning and I get home from practice to see that he got sent to SA. Boy did I call that!
Porter seems really composed out there. They have separated Porter and Kolarik and both seem to be doing well separately. Kolarik has just been sent to SA. Porter still seems to be doing well. He definitely has the hockey sense and poise to start in the NHL.
Hanzal still looks like he is hurting. He is still wearing the yellow “no contact” jersey. I hope they don’t rush him into playing before he is ready. I want Hanzal to be 100% or as close to it as he can be before coming back. He has so much potential, I don’t want this surgery to be the end of his career.
Zigomanis is still missing his damn tooth. It looks horrible. Other than that, I am not too impressed with Ziggy. I think he will end up in SA again. Or maybe DM will trade him. He lost his place last season and with the new young guys, I think he’s pretty much done as a coyote. It does suck a little, as he was the best face-off guy we had (beside No Panic Yanic, can we bring him back?).
Perrault currently has a concussion and hasn’t participated with any of the on-ice practices. He has been watching a lot of the on-ice practices. I can’t really evaluate not having seen him play. I am guessing he will come back in SA and then have to work his way back into the Coyotes lineup.
Rhino is actually looking pretty good in practices. Unfortunately with all the young guys and Jokinen, I think he’s been pushed down the depth chart. Rhino ended last season on a downward slide. He looks much better now and he was doing pretty well with some really bad passes today. I’m thinking he may be a trade sometime this year, maybe deadline. The only reason I see him sticking around all year is for that veteran presence. I believe he is UFA at the end of the year, so Maloney may try to get something from him instead of just letting him walk in the off season. I don’t see the Coyotes re-signing him at this point.
Winnik is looking good. His skating has improved so much since last season. I can defiantly see him making the team again this season. I have read some opinions that think he won’t make it with all the young guys, but with his improved skating, puck handling, and defensive minded-ness, I can see him on this team on the third line. Plus he is big, he hits and isn’t afraid to go into corners and fight for the puck.

Forwards that I think will be assigned to SA:
Garth Murray
Jeff Hoggan
Adam Keefe
Derek Nesbitt
Alex Bourret
I don’t have too much to say on these guys. I haven’t seen them play and they haven’t stuck out to me at camp except Adam Keefe. That’s because for a middle weight he is not afraid of anyone! He was left bleeding after a fight in Winnipeg and just came back out and kept checking the guy he got into a fight with. He is one tough guy.

13 players were sent to SA today. Here is the list:
Forwards-
Dave Spina
Simon Ferguson
Steven Goertzen
Francis Lessard
Adam Perry
Daine Todd
Defense-
Sean Sullivan
Sean Zimmerman
Dylan Reese
David Schlemko
Drew Fata
Michael Stone (actually sent back to his junior team)

Hey MissConduct, can you watch Sullivan, Zimmerman and Reese for me? Those are probably my three favorite D. As far as forwards, watch Dave Spina, Kolarik and MacLean. No goalies sent there yet, but I'm guessing I will need you to watch Tordjman and Montoya too. Is this list too long for you? Thanks! :)

I just want to mention Tyler Johnson. He is about 5’7 but very scrappy. He wants to play and you can tell. He pushed himself through 3 big king players and controlled the puck. He is quick and will go to the puck, no matter where it is. He wants it and I believe he will someday make the NHL. At practice he was doing a drill with Hanzal and he was faster than Hanzal. It was just funny to see the tallest guy skating with the shortest guy. I love this kid and no matter where he ends up, he will do well and be a great team player.

Playoffs, Yet Again

Both the Caps and Canadiens won tonight. That means the Habs move on and Caps force game 7.

San Antonio Rampage won against the Toronto Marlies tonight. 3-2. They now lead the series 2-1.

That's it for me tonight. I can't think much after spending the day looking at housing websites. haha

I checked the rumors and there wasn't anything that interesting out there. The one somewhat involving the Coyotes has Mike York going back the Germany to play next season. I predict this will probably happen because he didn't really prove that he belonged in the NHL this past season. All he proved was he was good at falling down. :)

End of the Season

It has been awhile since Ive posted. Ive been busy with work and other stuff.

First off I saw this on another forum and thought Id take a shot at it:

Best turn around game (positive): I think I will have to go back to the start of the season and say either the LA game when we first got Bryz or the NY Rangers/NJ Devils games. The fact that we could beat those two teams gave the guys a big confidence boost.

Best turn around game (negative): Calgary, we were up by 3 and then let them come back to win. It seemed we started getting worse from there.

Best Game of the Year: Sharks game where Carcillo got hurt. We were down and our Captain did what was needed to win the game. After that, we showed we had a chance to hang with the sharks (even beat them a couple more times!)

Worst Game of the Year: Either the Columbus game (the goal seen 'round the world) or the last Canucks/Oilers games. We didnt show up for either of those games. I think half our guys were already thinking about their summer golf outings.

Quick hits:
Best Offensive player: Vrbata (until his recent slump) and obviously Doan. Hes had an amazing season. Im wondering if playing for so long with a broken hand has kind of come back to bite him as he hasnt seemed himself lately.

Best Defensive player: Derek Morris, he really stepped up his game from last season. I hope he comes back and does that again. Z would be a close second. You don't notice him as much, but hes there quietly keeping us in some games.

Best Rookie: this is hard. Mueller and Hanzal both had great seasons. Each were asked to play different roles, so you cant compare them. Also, after the SA send down, Carcillo played well and really showed that he has the skills and he now knows it and is going to use it.

Biggest Surprise player: I would say Winnik. He has just gotten better and better as the season has progressed. Some would say Vrbata, but I had high expectations for him as he was a vast improvment over Adams. I knew we got the better end of that trade since day one.

Wow, that was hard. Trying to think back to all the games and evaluating. But it was fun to do.

Ok, and in news Turris signed with the big club! He has two games under his belt so far and you can just see the potential there. He is such an amazing passer. He shoots it high on net, something a lot of our guys dont seem to do (at least not lately).

Another signing was that of Nick Ross. He is now in SA. I hope he does well. I really liked him at rookie camp and they even let him play one pre season game. He wasnt bad but it showed he had a lot of work to do yet. Hopefully at least one year in SA will be a lot of help for him. Im thinking he will be there for at least 2 seasons, 1 seems like it would be rushing his development.

In Blake Wheeler news: he may stay at school for another year. This is what Ive been saying all along. Everyone was going on about how he doesnt want to sign and hes holding out but I had a feeling he just wasnt finished yet. If he goes back next year, he will be the captain. Why wouldnt he want to be captain? And what if they are better next year and get to the frozen four? If Wheeler wants to stay in school, I think thats great. I think hed learn more with a year in SA but ultimately its his decision and he has to do whats best for him.

The season ticket holder signing was this week. Went and got a few sigs. We only got through one table. They cut the lines off early. They said they would cut the lines at 8 but they actually did at 730 and that was about when we finally got through the first table. We went to the tables with Turris. That kid has so much energy and enthusiasm. Its refreshing and I hope a few of our guys catch it! Yandle was giving Turris/Rhino a hard time. Turris was signing my bros hat and he asked where he should sign it and my bro goes, "Right next to the great Steven Reinprecht" and Yandle looks at him and goes; "Who?". It was classic. Jovo was giving Bryz a hard time. It was hilarious. Jovo was totally joking and Bryz was getting all mad. His voice was getting all high pitched. I was laughing my ass off. The guy in front of me had a pic of bryz as a duck and Jovo goes, "that pucks going in" and bryz was like, "no its not. that is playoffs. no goals go in that game". And Jovo went, "no, no thats going in" and bryz's voice gets high pitched and basically repeats what he said before. I also got Fuhrs and Tocs autographs and a pic with Toc. When I was waiting a guy had some old school pics of toc so he was having fun with that. And he seems like a really cool guy. The guy was like I have a ton of stuff for you to sign and Toc was like Really? thats cool. And the guy was cool, hed have toc sign for him and then let who ever was waiting get a pic or autograph instead of just hogging toc. And then this lady walks up and goes, "who are you?" and Toc sticks out his hand an shakes hers and goes, "Im Rick. Im one of the associate coaches". And the lady was like oh ok! nice to meet you. haha, it made me laugh.

Last and final home game against Dallas Stars. Wow, first two periods sucked. but we came back in the third (too bad we couldnt pull off the tie, thanks jovo). I upgraded for this game. I figured last game of the season, why not. Carcillo got the team and crowd going when he took barch out with 2 punches. And i read that barch ended up with a slight concussion. The crowd was literally on their feet cheering for like five minutes. Then they cheered again when he came out of the box. Bally made up for his flub by scoring later in the third. Oh and Lisin got a goal with assists from Kapi and Carcillo. Its about time that line got some points, they have been the best/hardest working line for quite some time. Bryz was pulled and for whatever reason Jovo tried to pass when there was a Stars player right in front of him. So he passes to the stars player who has Jovo in front of an empty net. Hrmmm, yah, not that hard to put it in. So a sad ending to the home games. But, it was a great third period and kind of fitting since their home record was bad this year.

Last night they were in Dallass. And Carcillo gets a hat trick and a fight. It was awesome. We ended up cheering so loud when he was on his way to the empty netter. I liked how he carried it into the zone and right to the net. He wanted to make sure that baby went in! Too many times we shoot from too far out with the empty net and miss. But yah, he just showed how much skill he had. he totally had turco going with that second goal. Hanzal got a goal too. There was a time when i thought we were going to lose it. We let Dallas catch us too often. Im so glad I went and watched this game. AMAZING. And Carcillo was named NHLs FIRST star of the night!

Last game of the year for us agains Anaheim Ducks on Sunday. Pronger will be back. We can and will beat them. No matter if we win or lose we will end up either 6, 7 or 8 in the draft (depending on what others do). Im not worred where we pick, I have trust in our scouting department (they have found some great draft picks that are usually below others radars and in trades ie Carcillo, someone had to have an eye on him). Plus we have like 6 picks in the first few rounds. We could even trade up if it doesnt cost much. But anyway back to the Anaheim game. Its on local tv, so I will be watching it and cheereing my ass off. I predict Turris will have his moment this game. He will get either an assist or goal. Hes had a couple of games to adjust and it would be great if he got a point and then went back to school.

Also, Lisin and Yandle were sent back to San Antonio Rampage. Im glad. Lisin should get a shot at playing for the playoffs since he helped get them there. It will be good experience for him. Yandle really needs some more time to develop this year. He had far to many flubs this call up. Give him a chance to work on his defense and then let him see if he can make the big team out of training camp.

And Im excited, looks like Preds and Caps will be in the playoffs. I will be watching them. Buffalo is out. :( I dont care about anyone else in the west that made the playoffs. The east has a couple of other teams I will be interested in seeing how they do in the playoffs. So, I will hopefully be able to write some more on the playoffs once they start.

Ok, I have written enough for today. Once the season is over, I plan on doing an entry about the last game. I will also have plenty of time to go over the UFAs and RFAs on this team and evaluate each player and give my opinion on what we should do with them. (And Ive got some opinions here). I also need to look at the list of upcoming UFAs for the entire league. I havent looked at that much this year since we've been playing pretty well and there was the excitement of maybe making the playoffs.

News!

Lisin called up from San Antonio.

I guess we will see if he has really improved his overall game. He also may give the team another offensive spark. Im not sure what line I see him on. He is a RW as opposed to Carcillo on the LW. I doubt he cracks the first two lines, as we have doan-rhino-mueller and vrbata-hanzal-sjo pretty well set.

That leaves DW (C - has been playing RW), Kapi (C or has played wing, but I dont know which one - I think R), Ziggy (C but I think hes played a wing), Tj (LW), York (LW) and Weller (RW). Weller and Ziggy have been scratched. Im not sure if weller is better now or not. So we got 3 centers, 2 LW and 2 RW. So Im guessing it will be something like Ziggy scratched (as has been the case lately) and Weller out due to concussion. DW and Kapi have been together so you could throw York on that line. And then have Tj and Lisin on a line with either Ziggy (if hes not scratched) or double shift someone. I believe thats pretty close to what we were running. I believe York was with Tj and Kapi. I feel like Im missing someone. Who was playing right for Carcillo-Winnik? Was it Kapi? Then who was on the 4th line, Tj and York and ???? I swear it was Kapi. Oh well.

And heres to hoping for a speedy recovery for Carcillo. His energy was surely missed in the Vancouver game. It will be again when we play the Wild and Detroit. He had one of his better games against the wild earlier this year (2 goals, and very nice goals at that).

Good News!

Carcillo just has a sprain. He will be out probably 6-8 weeks.

From Jim G's blog:
Coyotes rookie LW Daniel Carcillo, walking gingerly but without crutches, began a 6-to-8 week rehab process Saturday morning.
He was frustrated that he will be out of the lineup, but he was upbeat about working hard and getting his sprained knee healed.
He said he did not blame Sharks C Jeremy Roenick for the injury that occurred during one of several fights on the ice

Ok, the no crutches thing is probably a good sign. If it was really bad, they would have him not putting weight on it. And that shows some maturity and just knowing that game about not blaming Roenick.

Hopefully Carcillo will be back in the line up soon. But not too soon. Make sure hes completly healed before he comes back so as not to re-injure and be out longer.

He will be missed in the line up, thats for sure. Yes he brings some skill but he brings an energy and intensity to the team that can not be filled with a call up from San Antonio

Tonight I will be attending the first home game in about 2 weeks. Hopefully we can continue this win streak and beat Vancouver and Luongo. I will try to update tomorrow with game notes.

Quote of the Day:
"This was a huge win for us. In the previous game we lost, they scored only one goal . . . and I see tonight, this team fighting again, our guys feeling like we can win this game and fight at the end, and we were rewarded." - Coyotes Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov
